For a long time, I didn’t recognize myself. The weight gain, the self-doubt, the struggle to complete even the simplest tasks—it all felt like a reflection of the emotional abuse I endured. My confidence had been attacked, torn down, and left in pieces, and I wasn’t sure if I’d ever feel like myself again.
Maybe you can relate. Maybe you’ve been through an experience that shook your self-worth and left you feeling lost in your own life. If so, I want you to know something: You can reclaim your confidence, starting today—one small step at a time.
The Residue of Emotional Abuse: Why Confidence Takes a Hit
Emotional abuse doesn’t just leave invisible scars—it changes how we see ourselves. For me, it led to:
✔️ Disorganization and clutter—both physically and mentally
✔️ Difficulty completing tasks—because self-doubt made everything feel overwhelming
✔️ Struggles with believing in myself—after years of being made to feel unworthy
But I refused to let that be the end of my story. I knew that confidence wasn’t something I could just “get back” overnight—but it was something I could rebuild.
The Small Steps That Made a Big Impact
Healing and reclaiming confidence is a journey, not a destination. Here are the small but powerful steps that helped me—and that you can start today:
1. Seeking Professional Support 🛋️
Therapy was a game-changer for me. Talking through my experiences helped me unpack the self-doubt, pain, and limiting beliefs that were holding me back. If therapy isn’t accessible, journaling, self-help books, or even confiding in a trusted friend can be a great starting point.
2. Moving My Body, Healing My Mind 🏋🏽♀️
Exercise became more than just a way to lose weight—it became a way to reconnect with myself. Moving my body reminded me of my strength, discipline, and resilience. Whether it’s a full workout, a short walk, or stretching in the morning, movement is a form of self-care.
3. Creating a Support System 🤝
I leaned on the people who truly cared about me. The ones who reminded me of my worth when I forgot. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, not those who drain you. If you don’t have that support right now, start by joining online communities or local groups that align with your healing journey.
4. Strengthening My Spiritual Life 🙏🏽
Prayer and worship gave me the inner peace and guidance I needed to push forward. Whatever your faith or spiritual practice, finding a source of hope, strength, and grounding can make all the difference when rebuilding confidence.
5. Committing to Progress, Not Perfection 🌱
There were days when I felt stuck, when I wanted to give up. But I reminded myself: healing is not linear. Each small step—no matter how insignificant it felt—was still a step forward.
Why Confidence Matters: Showing Up for Yourself & Others
I fight to reclaim my confidence not just for me, but for my son. He needs to see what resilience looks like. I want him to grow up knowing that setbacks don’t define us—our strength to rise again does.
And beyond that? Confidence attracts goodness. When we believe in ourselves, we invite healthy relationships, fulfilling opportunities, and positive energy into our lives.
Your Next Step: Start Small, But Start Today
You don’t have to have it all figured out today. Just start with one small step:
💛 Book that therapy session.
💛 Take a 10-minute walk.
💛 Clear one small space in your home.
💛 Speak a kind word to yourself in the mirror.
Whatever it is—just begin. Confidence is not about having all the answers; it’s about believing you are worthy of the journey. And you are.
